The grant and VAT

It’s installer-led, so your MCS-certified installer applies and the grant comes straight off the quote; you don’t claim it yourself. Hybrids that keep a fossil-fuel boiler alongside the heat pump aren’t eligible, and the old rule requiring an EPC with no outstanding insulation recommendations has been removed. There’s also 0% VAT on qualifying heat pump installs until 31 March 2027.
What pushes the price up
Both the Heatable band and iHeat’s fixed packages assume a straightforward install. The survey exists to catch what isn’t, and these are the usual additions:
- Coming from a combi. You need a hot-water cylinder, which means finding cupboard or loft space. A home that already has a tank is the simpler conversion.
- Radiators. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than a boiler, so some radiators stay and some need upsizing.
- Electrics. Some jobs need a dedicated supply or a consumer-unit upgrade.
- Older systems. Tired pipework and cylinders can need replacing before the system runs well.
The sticker and the after-grant balance are only half the decision. What a heat pump costs to run depends on your tariff, your insulation and how well the system is designed, so a keenly-priced install on a leaky house can still cost more to run than a well-designed one next door. Who an air source heat pump is for
An air source heat pump makes most sense if you’re replacing an ageing oil, LPG or electric system, or a gas boiler you’re ready to move on from, and your home is reasonably well insulated or you’re willing to get it there.
